The port of Dunkirk in brief
Discover Dunkirk, a major port with a wide range of maritime activities, a key logistics hub at the heart of Europe, a driving force for industrial innovation and a pioneer in the energy transition.
A dynamic and versatile port
With annual traffic of around 50 million tonnes, Dunkirk is one of Northern Europe’s leading ports. It is a multi-purpose port, capable of handling all types of traffic, and, along with the other seaports in the Hauts-de-France region, is one of France’s leading port hubs.
Today, Dunkirk’s port ecosystem encompasses a wide range of maritime, logistics and industrial activities, with the aim of anchoring them in the region over the long term.
By developing a sustainable and innovative economic model, the port and, more broadly, the entire region are firmly committed to mitigating and adapting to climate change, with the aim of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
A sustainable and innovative business model
low-carbon energy
The Port of Dunkirk is Europe’s leading energy hub, thanks to its trade in and production of transitional energies. Several port terminals are dedicated to the handling and distribution of bulk energy, and the Dunkirk LNG terminal is the second largest in continental Europe in terms of volumes handled.
industry
The Dunkirk area is one of Europe’s leading industrial centres, committed to decarbonising industrial processes, developing a circular economy and green reindustrialisation. The Port of Dunkirk has several terminals specialising in the reception and storage of industrial bulk goods, meeting the needs of the local, regional, national and European economies.
electric mobility
The Port of Dunkirk is at the heart of the electric battery valley in the Hauts-de-France region. The developing ‘electric mobility’ sector includes not only the production and recycling of batteries, but also the manufacture of upstream components, as well as logistics and maritime exports of new vehicles downstream.
Containers
The Port of Dunkirk is one of the only ports in Northern Europe capable of handling the world’s largest container ships at their full capacity, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with no tidal constraints. Over the past 10 years, container activity has tripled, and Dunkirk is currently leading the CAP2020 project, which aims to double its container handling capacity by 2028.
logistics
Dunkirk is set to welcome more than 400,000 m² of new warehouses by 2028. The Port of Dunkirk has established itself as a key logistics hub for the agri-food industry, particularly for temperature-controlled products. Backed by a major wheat and barley production basin, the Port of Dunkirk is also a benchmark for cereal flows, with a storage capacity of 360,000 tonnes.
the British Isles
Strategically located at the entrance to the Pas-de-Calais Strait, Dunkirk offers efficient services for both ferries and roll-on/roll-off vessels, with Dover (UK) and Rosslare (Ireland).
In total, the Dunkirk port ecosystem generates annual added value of around €3.8 billion and provides over 29,000 direct, indirect and induced jobs.
With the new projects underway, the Dunkirk port area expects to create an additional 20,000 jobs by 2030, strengthening its economic and social impact.
